March 22nd marks World Water Day 2013, a United Nations effort to help raise awareness on the global water challenge. The day represents a culminating event within the International Year of Water Cooperation and advocates for the sustainable management of water resources.
The UN recognizes that, “water is a shared resource and its management needs to take into account a wide variety of conflicting interests.” As the population increases, so does the need for water. Climate change has also affected the availability and quality of water.
There will be a 40% gap between water supply and demand by 2030. Tension of water resource is already exemplified between states such as Ethiopia and Egypt, India and Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, and China and its Mekong neighbors.
