Micro Power - A new biz model to get off-the-grid villages to be electrified using solar power.
What a disruptive business model. OMCpower is a company in India which distributes Powerboxes and lightboxes (lanterns) to people living in villages where there is no electric grid. People rent these boxes and replace them when the power runs out. I guess it's like going for groceries.
The powerbox can be used to run TVs, radios, fans or charging mobile phones. Products which the villagers have never had the luxury to use owing to the lack of power. This in turn creates demand for the products and thus creating a virtuous cycle.
Owing to the nature of physically distributing these powerboxes, there is an increase in local employment as the company works with local entrepreneurs to train and distribute the powerboxes.
